An Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is a hole between the two upper chambers; a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a hole between the two lower pumping chambers and is the commonest congenital heart defect.
Many small defects close on their own in early childhood. Persistent ASDs and suitable VSDs can be closed with a catheter-delivered septal occluder — no open-heart surgery. Larger or awkwardly placed defects are corrected surgically. Timely closure protects the lungs and prevents long-term heart strain.
