Many "holes in the heart" — ASD, VSD and PDA — can now be closed without opening the chest. Understanding the two routes helps you make a calm, informed choice.

Device (catheter) closure

A soft implant is guided through a small tube in a leg vessel and placed to seal the defect. There is no chest incision and no scar, and most children go home the next day. It suits many secundum ASDs, most PDAs and selected VSDs.

Open-heart surgery

Some defects — large or awkwardly placed VSDs, or defects with other problems — are best repaired surgically, with excellent, durable results. Your cardiologist and surgeon decide together.

How the choice is made

  • The type, size and position of the defect
  • The child's weight, age and overall heart function
  • Whether other repairs are needed at the same time
The goal is the same for both routes — a fully closed defect and a heart free to grow normally.
